What is a writing circle?
Writing circles are a fun, safe, flexible gathering of people who want to write creatively. Participants can be writers, friends, people who share an interest in expanding their creativity or those who simply want to have a blast. I always recommend a few rules, but otherwise the structure is wide open.
How Does it Work?
Participants write in response to prompts, for a specified amount of time (usually 7 to 10 minutes), then share what they’ve written with the group. Feedback is always positive. Unlike a critique group, a writing circle is meant to jump start writers who are stuck, allow new writers a safe place to try it out, give accomplished writers a venue for experimental work, or simply to give friends a fun new way of learning more about themselves and their chums.
What Will I Gain from a Writing Circle?
In every writing circle I have participated in or facilitated, everyone in the circle has been surprised and delighted by what emerges on the page. It will startle and amaze you. We laugh, cry, and learn something we didn’t know about each other and ourselves. Whether your group consists of long-time friends, casual acquaintances, or total strangers, you will come away with new awareness of each other. If you are already a writer, you’ll find your work opening up, your writing more fluid and free. If you’ve never attempted creative writing, you’ll be surprised at how much fun it can be.
How Do I Find a Writing Circle?
I offer writing circles in the Portland metropolitan area. Often I hold them in a participant’s home, my home, or a comfortable facility in the Milwaukie area. I will post open circles coming up, or if your group would like me to facilitate one for you, contact me and we’ll set it up.
If you live outside the Portland area, I can instruct a designated facilitator on how to set it up, with follow-up guidance once the circle is established.

Testimonials
As a participant in Carol's writing circle, I have learned much about myself, my friends, and the writing ability of all of us. We laugh and cry together and touch places in our minds and hearts that I never knew existed. Carol is a wonderful and caring leader of our circle and has uplifted all of us with her writing experience and her compassion for everyone she meets. Thank you, Carol, for all you do! ~ Marian
I am in a writer's circle that meets once a month to enjoy learning how to write, be inspired by each other's writing and just have a great time. We meet for two hours, which is just right. I have never written a story but always thought it would be a great way to express myself or learn more about myself. I was right. Carol Sweet put the writer's circle together and facilitates it each month in a very organized and enjoyable way. But Carol also participates, which really makes everyone comfortable and on common ground. Learning to write in the way that Carol teaches is fun, creative and produces incredible stories. ~ Laraine
I would recommend Carol Sweet for any creative writing endeavor or workshop. She has inspired all of us in our writer's circle. I have been happily participating in Carol Sweet's writing circle for the past few months. I have found the group to be very inspiring and helpful. Carol is a wonderful leader. She brings great prompts for our writing and her gentle, positive style helps each person feel safe to write to their hearts content and share their stories. The inspiration and creativity that come forward are truly profound. I highly recommend Carol's work. ~ Dawn
