Custom Designed Workshops

At the present time I am exclusively offering workshops sponsored by groups in the Portland, OR metropolitan area. If you are in a book group, writing group, scrapbooking club or any other kind of special-interest organization that would enjoy exploring creative writing, I would love to present one of the workshops listed below. Imagine your scrapbook coming alive with remembered stories of your life evoked in a Life's Journey workshop. Or if you have another special interest I will gladly design a custom-made workshop especially for your organization. It's fun and may very well open new creative windows that you will enjoy for a lifetime. Give me a call at 503.381.7032 or email me at sweetwriter@gmail.com to talk about options and costs for your group.

Life's Journey – Life is a journey. Come aboard and surprise yourself with how easy it is to organize and write your life story in this unique, fun and productive workshop. You will find memories flooding back as you are guided through easy exercises to recapture stories you had thought were lost. Whether you are writing a memoir or autobiography, to leave as a legacy for your descendants or for publication, this workshop will make it easier than you would ever have imagined. All aboard for the adventure of a lifetime!

The InExpressible Joy of Writing – Creative writing can be many things. Sometimes it haunts us as a "should," as in "I should write more," "I should write better." It can be an intimidating seductress that draws us in but raises doubts and fears. It's time to lighten up and have fun with your writing. In this playful workshop we'll explore and experiment. Leave our internal critic inside the closet. We won't talk about whether what we're writing is "good" or if we're using correct grammar. We'll turn loose the imp to remind ourselves why we want to write—for the pure joy of it.

Writing From the Well - Our best writing comes from a source deep within us. It lies below the level of our often-repeated stories, the memories that swim close to the surface. Accessing the clear, still water that lies at our core requires a commitment to writing our own truth, no matter what sediment it may stir up. It's this honesty that helps to heal us and resonates on a deep level with our reader. In this workshop we'll explore the depths and write from the well within.

Other Workshops Available

  • Life's Journey—Write Your Life Story. This workshop presents a unique, theme-based approach to writing the stories of your life.
  • Spirituality through Creative Writing. In my view, creativity and spirituality are intrinsically connected. I feel most connected to the universe when I am creating, whether it's writing, drawing, playing music or dancing. In this workshop we explore that connection. The content of this workshop is not tied to any one faith or belief system.
  • Journaling for Health & Self-Discovery. Since the 1970s, when Ira Progoff's ground-breaking Journal Workshop debuted, extensive research has supported the assertion that writing a daily journal promotes physical health, spiritual growth and self-discovery. Join others in this workshop to begin or expand the rewarding experience of recording your life, thoughts, dreams and aspirations.
  •  Busting Down the Barn Door—Breaking Out of Writer's Block. If you're stuck in a ditch, the muse has gone missing or is trapped behind the barn door, this is the workshop for you. We'll do outrageously fun exercises, have some laughs and bust through that block. You'll come away with new energy in your writing and a smile on your face.
  •  Immigrant, Tell Us Your Story—Creative Writing For ESL Students. Telling your story is one of the best ways to learn English, because the passion drives you. Join others who are learning to express themselves in this new and difficult language and tell us your story.
  • Write Here, Where You Are—Create a Sense of Place in Your Writing. Setting your story in a place that is familiar to you gives it immediacy, texture, and grounds it in  reality. Join us in this fun workshop to learn how to weave place into your writing.
  • Sensual Writing—Enrich Your Writing & Engage Your Reader by Appealing to  the Senses. When your reader can smell the dank river, feel the texture of the coarse cloth the slave wore, and taste the sour wine the jilted lover drank, she becomes part of that story. It becomes real and compelling. Let this workshop bring you to your senses—all five of them.
  • Elements of Fiction—In each session we'll explore in depth an essential element of fiction: character, point of view, plot, setting, and theme. You'll create a complete short story in six weeks.
